David Bowie has celebrated his 66th birthday by releasing a new single, Where Are We Now?, ahead of his first new album in 10 years.

The track was put on sale in the iTunes store in 119 countries on Tuesday morning and a video preview posted on his website, which has been relaunched for the occasion. His 30th studio recording, The Next Day, would be released in March, said the Iso/Columbia record company.

The glam-rock singer shot to fame in the late 60s with Space Oddity but has been largely silent in recent years, not performing live since 2006 and rarely appearing in public since then. Bowie turned down the opportunity to appear at the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony despite a personal plea by director Danny Boyle.

"Throwing shadows and avoiding the industry treadmill is very David Bowie despite his extraordinary track record that includes album sales in excess of 130m, not to mention his massive contributions in the area of art, fashion, style, sexual exploration and social commentary," said a Columbia press release.

The record, produced by long-term collaborator Tony Visconti and written by Bowie, was recorded in New York, Columbia said. The single is accompanied by a video directed by Tony Oursler that harks back to Bowie's time in Berlin. He is seen looking in on footage of the auto repair shop beneath the apartment he lived in along with stark images of the city at the time.

The spokesman added that Bowie was the sort of artist who "writes and performs what he wants when he wants".

A second representative subsequently told the Guardian there were no plans for interviews or live dates.

Titled 'The Next Day', the album has been produced by Bowie's longtime collaborator Tony Visconti and will be released in the UK and most countries worldwide on March 11. Australia will get the albums three days earlier on March 8, while American fans will have to wait until March 12.

The album's standard edition contains 14 tracks with the 'Deluxe Version' adding three more. Both are available to pre-order on iTunes now.

To mark the album announcement, which comes on the day of his 66th birthday (January 8 2013), Bowie has released its first single immediately. Titled 'Where Are We Now?', it is available for download now and you can watch a video for the track on Bowie's website.

The song's lyrics draw from Bowie's Berlin years with references to Potsdamer Platz, a square in the city centre, and KaDeWe, the city's most famous department store. The chorus goes: "Where are we now? Where are we now? The moment you know, you know you know."

Bowie's last album, 'Reality', was released in 2003 and he wrapped up his most recent tour in 2004. In recent years, the singer has kept a remarkably low profile, something which the album announcement on his official website acknowledged.

The announcement reads: "In recent years radio silence has been broken only by endless speculation, rumour and wishful thinking ....a new record...who would have ever thought it, who'd have ever dreamed it! After all David is the kind of artist who writes and performs what he wants when he wants...when he has something to say as opposed to something to sell. Today he definitely has something to say."

El single huele a naftalina. Es un notición su vuelta pero el tema... en fin.

Pues a mí me ha parecido un buen single. Solo he escuchado una vez, pero me parece un buen homenaje a su época Berlín, y aunque no suene a esos años, es un buen baladón. Además, tiene un final muy molón.

Pues eso, que no nos hagamos muchas pajas. A mi el tema si me gusta, muy tristón, pero bien hecho.

El que diga que la canción no mola no tiene ni puta idea. Tenía muchas ganas de escuchar algo nuevo de Bowie y me esperaba algo entre el "meh!" y el "bah!" pero me ha encantado!!



Que haga gira y después de verle podré morir tranquilo.

Verle en directo va a seguir siendo una quimera, sin duda, aun así la simple noticia oficial de un nuevo disco con fecha de lanzamiento y todo me parece algo tremendísimo. En fin, que ilusión a cholón por mi parte.

Buen single, en mi opinión, emotivo y sobre todo reflexivo. Nada pretencioso y que se ajusta a lo que realmente Bowie pueda ofrecer hoy día, quizás ese sea su mejor virtud.

A mi me parece una delicia de canción. El final es tremendo.

Como no debo tener ni puta idea y como escuchar a otros grupos invalida que pueda tener una opinión propia, os podéis pasar lo que voy a decir por dónde queráis, avisados

A mi me parece un tema un tanto mediocre para ser la vuelta al ruedo de una leyenda de la música tras casi 10 años, la verdad. Sosa y monótona, a pesar de que al final remonta el vuelo un poco. No sé, digo yo que algo más se le podrá exigir a Bowie, ¿no?

Y por una vez no he sido yo el que ha dicho lo de los vacunas .

A ver, no sé que os esperáis que saque Bowie después de estar 10 años encerrado en su casa y sin hacer nada. Desde luego, me sorprendería que sacase un disco de dubstep a estas alturas...Este no es el Bowie de los noventa al que le dio por el jungle.

Es una canción que refleja lo que es Bowie ahora mismo, una persona de 66 años madura y con mucho talento, ya no es tiempo de Hits y de singles, Cohen, Dylan, Young y ahora Bowie dan guerra a su manera y con mucho talento, yo digo sí.

A mi el disco me da igual. Cuando salga lo escucharé pero si es una mierda no lastrará la carrera de Bowie y si es la bomba lo encumbrará aun más (si es que se puede). El tema del disco es que ahora ya tiene una excusa para girar, pero si se va a quedar en su casa o le da la venada de salir de gira y tocar sólo el nuevo disco pues poco interés la verdad.

Es una gran noticia que vuelva a la actividad, pero para mi el bombazo real sería que confirmara una gira.

We wanted to do something different with it – very difficult in an area where everything has been done before – but we dare to think this is something new. Normally using an image from the past means, ‘recycle’ or ‘greatest hits’ but here we are referring to the title The Next Day. The “Heroes” cover obscured by the white square is about the spirit of great pop or rock music which is ‘of the moment’, forgetting or obliterating the past.

However, we all know that this is never quite the case, no matter how much we try, we cannot break free from the past. When you are creative, it manifests itself in every way – it seeps out in every new mark you make (particularly in the case of an artist like Bowie). It always looms large and people will judge you always in relation to your history, no matter how much you try to escape it. – Why “Heroes”?
If you are going to subvert an album by David Bowie there are many to choose from but this is one of his most revered, it had to be an image that would really jar if it were subverted in some way and we thought “Heroes” worked best on all counts. Also the new album is very contemplative and the “Heroes” cover matched this mood. The song Where are we now? is a comparison between Berlin when the wall fell and Berlin today. Most people know of Bowie’s heritage in Berlin and we want people to think about the time when the original album was produced and now.
