si funcionaba, lo tuve que abrir con el windows media....

Midnight Choir ha sido una de las bandas noruegas con mejores críticas de la pasada década. Encabezados por Paal Flaata (a quien la revista Mojo definió como 'una voz que hace que Scott Walker suene como Little Jimmy Osmond' y elegido repetidamente por las noruegas como el hombre más sexy de su país), que acaba de publicar su primer disco en solitario, y por Al DeLoner (que acaba de colaborar con la española Ainara LeGardon en su segundo disco), la banda nos ha ofrecido durante una década algunos de los mejores momentos del folk rock alternativo y atmosférico escandinavo. CANCION A CANCION

Side 1 (The Pain of Stayin’ Sober)
1. “Easier,” kicks off the album like an anthem for love-torn souls plagued with silver-lined heartbreak juxtaposed against murderous thoughts of revenge. Vintage Deer Tick, right? Dark, moody, up-tempo and unkempt. Full of spirit. I can feel Couley’s pain, I share it with him. And I’m hooked. A good start to what could be a great album, and the song you’re most likely going to hear on the radio.

2. “Little White Lies,” follows next and starts off slow. I begin to worry whether we may have lost the tightly tuned songwriting and earnest delivery of yore. In the end I’d say this is one of the lesser songs of the front five tracks, but the change-up just past the two-minute mark grabs me by my flannel collar and throws me into the next track with a smile.

3. “Smith Hill,” is a heart-wrenching, soaring ballad which demonstrates a band coming into their own with important, memorable songs. Everything just comes together here. The peaks and valleys, the chill emotion in every word “I can drink myself to death tonight. I can stand and give a toast. To those who made it out alive, but it’s you I miss the most.”. This song might define the evolution of Deer Tick most succinctly. It’s also the song I want to listen to over and over again.

4. Hollow and barren, yet resonant for all its vacancy, “Song About a Man,” crescendos with a harmonica before retreating back into the creaky saloon where it came from. Couley’s viewpoint comes through in the songwriting yet again: “How can a man feel anything, when all he’s ever got was sympathy?” A question I’ve never asked myself, yet it makes you wonder…

5. The guitar riff on “Houston, TX,” cascades beautifully, like a finely wrought Iron & Wine song, yet doesn’t resemble Sam Beam in any substantive way. We roll along a dirt road in a muddy pick-up and the sun’s just about to set. Everything’s all right as we ride off into the distance, with Couley singin’ “Oh move on, oh move on.” And so we keep on moving.

Side 2 (The Joy of Gettin’ Shitcanned)
But wait, there’s still another five tracks, right? So what am I doing driving off into the sunset you ask? Damn, you caught me. It’s just that… well I wish I could stop right now, because the rest of this until-now potential-filled album doesn’t hold a bottle rocket to the first five songs. Side 2 finds a different, lesser iteration of Deer Tick in just about every fathomable way.

This is the side of Deer Tick I hoped had been purged on War Elephant. The gravely emotion is replaced by lackluster honkey tonk homage, with John Couley vying to open for Marty Stewart and George Strait on the next big Country & Western festival circuit. Summerfest here we come!

6. “Straight Into a Storm,” is something you might dance to at your local tavern, sawdust on the dancefloor, quarter in the jukebox. The only problem is that when you finally touch boot to hardwood floor you’re surrounded by your grandparents and all their friends. They love this song, and so you start to hate it.

7. On “Friday XIII,” Couley makes a valiant effort to add some dimension with, dare I say it, a duet? I remember when Songs:Ohia made their Magnolia Electric Co. album. Three new vocalists joined the fray, including Jenny Benford, bringing something new to Molina’s music we hadn’t heard before. The only problem here is, this song is more a demonstration in getting drunk and fooling around with your girlfriend in her mom’s bedroom than it is a song of any true note. “So let’s get back to what, all that was fair and just, oh won’t you please love me again?” they croon during the chorus, and I feel like somehow they’re pleading directly to me.

8. “The Ghost,” had me yawning from the start, and nodding off by the end. I don’t mind a sleepy ballad, but when the songwriting devolves to lines like: “Oh you don’t have to say anything. But you have got to mean everything,” you have to wonder where the Couley of old (just a few tracks old, specifically) ran off to? He sings off key in many places here, but not in the forgiving way borne of emotional delivery. Here I’m reminded of “What Kind of Fool Am I?” and I can’t help but wince.

9. “Hell On Earth,” is easily the strongest of this batch of songs, and for me the only bright spot on the back five. They took a down-trodden narrative and pushed it somewhere noteworthy, the way “Smith Hill,” proved they could do earlier on. Despite a slightly predictable and flat structure, I liked this melody enough to stick it out a little longer.

10. Deer Tick still don’t know how to end an album it seems, as “Stung,” tries desperately to take us out with a drunken doo wop flare. Couley almost gets me to care through the first verse, even though it’s all a bit bad karaoke and too many Zimas to my ears. When the chorus finally kicks in I realize this is the last song of the album, the last song! and I’m fighting the nagging urge to skip back to the beginning and try to forget it ended like this.

Me lo voy a bajar que tiene buena pinta. Por cierto, el de Khatkhuda muy bonito. Y otro, no sé si me lo bajé de por aquí, ni si es folk, o yoquesé, el de Elvis Perkins in Dearland. Me encanta! A este tío quiero verlo, mucho.

El de Damien katkhuda es de una fragilidad exquisita, muy bonito y muy romantico! y lo mejor de todo...es muy bueno! todas las canciones estan cuidadas al milimetro.

A mi Elvis Perkins me encanto en el primavera de hace un par de años presentando su disco debut, y eso que tocaron con insrumentos de prestado porque perdieron o les robaron,no se, los suyos, aun asi menudo conciertaco hicieron, de los que mas me gustaron de esa edicion del ps. Este nuevo proyecto como in dearland a mi tambien me gusta pero pierde respecto aquel maravilloso disco de debut que hizo, me gusta mucho mas, en un rato lo cuelgo tambien.

Y de mientras..aqui otro disco que tiene muy buena pinta, lo estoy escuchando ahora y esta chulo...

Dog Is Blue is the stage name of Toronto musician Paul Watson. His latest release is the ghost-folk album …Makes Ghost Noises.
Nowadays when an artist makes sparsely arranged acoustic music with a subtle synth embellishments they almost inevitably get compared to acts like Bon Iver. That holds true for Dog Is Blue.
Unlike Bon Iver however, Dog Is Blue’s songs, like “Seacaptain”, are warm and engaging. Well placed percussion, backing vocal harmonies, and the odd whistle lend these tracks greater texture and warmth than we hear from the cold and stark Justin Vernon.
Thematically the songs tend to stick close to the traditions of folk music. The tracks are the typical tales of regret, longing, and loneliness. Where Dog Is Blue differs from the most of the indie folkies is in his lyrics. Lyrics like comparing wrestling an alligator to winning over a woman (”Alligator Song”) makes his songs clever and at times humorous rather than being morose, monotone downers.
If you want songs that are inviting, well-crafted, and smart then you definitely need to check out Dog Is Blue

...Perkins tiene el pulso cogido al folk donde M. Ward lo ha logrado colocar con su último disco, y cuenta con el tono justo de trovador que tan bien ha sabido exprimir Devendra Banhart, salvo que carece del humor inteligente que tan bien dosifica este. Pero las comparaciones no terminan aquí. Continúo. Antes de editar este disco de debut, Elvis Perkins ya había conseguido cierta reputación entre los aficionados a la música en directo del mismo modo que lo hiciera Bob Dylan casi cuarenta años atrás, despertando una expectación realmente importante entre los más listillos del cotarro. Imagino que a ninguno de ellos habrá defraudado este primer disco de Perkins, una obra que recuerda por momentos, además de a los ya citados, al Van Morrison de Astral Weeks, a las aventuras menos demoledoras de Bonnie "Prince" Billy, al afán revisionista de Cat Power y, sobre todo, al Nick Drake de Bryter Later, entre otros. Es decir, que Perkins no inventa nada, pero sabe reciclar de manera hermosa a lo mejor del folk de hace casi cuarenta años y a lo más actual. Y lo hace con buen tino y pulso firme...

Así que bueno, puede que Elvis Perkins fuera el hijo de Anthony Perkins y que su madre muriera en los atentados del 11-S. Y puede que me recuerde a Neutral Milk Hotel, Micah P. Hinson, Eef Barzelay y Elliott Smith pero está claro que eso no es lo importante. Lo importante es que es una persona con tanto talento que cuando empieza el disco sabes que vas a estar a gusto durante los próximos 50 minutos.

Txesk, gracias por el enlace de elvis , la de While you were sleeping la había escuchado y ahora no sé donde. La verdad es que me gusta más el segundo, le da un nuevo matiz a su voz, es como más aguda, y lo veo más animado y variado. No tenía ni idea que era el hijo de anthony perkins.

Bajando a Magnolia, Explosion, uno de los conciertos del ps que más me arrepiento de haberme perdido. No se puede tener todo.

Pues si, es hijo de tony perkins, al pobre seguro que le deben recordar la pelicula psicosis en todas partes pidiendole que le cuenten cosas de su padre y de la peli a todas horas jajaja....y por lo visto su madre murio en lo de las torres del 11S...su padre tambien murio hace tiempo, encima debe ser el unico al que el ps le roban o pierde todos sus instrumentos y a saber que mas... vamos, que la vida y el se llevan de lujo por lo visto :face:

Pero si, Elvis Perkins promete mucho, de momento dos de dos, dos discos los dos muy buenos.

Yo me he enamorado de esta mujer y del disco que tiene que no la conocía. De lo mejor que he escuchado últimamente. El disco es de 2007, pero lo han reeditado ahora a finales de Abril de 2009.

En el LastFM le ponen como artistas parecidos a Mariee Sioux, Alela Diane, Moriarty, Shannon Wright o Dawn Landes. Y si, tiene bastantes elementos comunes con todas esas mujeres pero a mi a la que mas me recuerda es a Cat Power. A la Cat Power de sus inicios, no a la de ahora. Una voz se podría decir que prácticamente idéntica a la que tenía Chan Marshall en aquellos discos, mezclando piano con guitarras y, todo siempre dentro de un halo de oscuridad muy chulo. Por no hablar de las letras que también tienen su miga, muy oscuras ellas.

Ayer estuvimos hablando de Elvis Perkins, ahora que lo leo, lo voy a buscar y lo bajo, no se por qué no he bajado este disco en su día, si esta en este post , se me ha pasado..

Emily Jane White es un cantante de folk dark proveniente de San francisco, California. Ella comenzó a experimentar con el canto y la creación de su estilo UC Santa Cruz. Sus influencias incluyen clásicos de blues y folk, cantantes como Nick Cave y PJ Harvey, y mitologías de distintas culturas. Después de terminar la universidad, paso un tiempo en Francia hasta que se traslado de vuelta a San Francisco. Los integrantes que componen el grupo de Emily Jane White son: Ross Harris, Henry Nagle, Jen Grady, Carey Lamprecht.

The story behind “Oh Maria” seems like an unfortunate series of experiences that led to JR recording the story. There has been struggle that JR has worked through on his journey - both across Canada in life and in creating this album. The presentation of these 10 songs is intimate, confessional and a storyline of recent life experiences that he/or his character on the album overcomes. Like many before him, life teaches and shows you its ups and downs, and this album is all about that.

The sound of the album is essentially a gospel country album at heart. There is many influences from soul, jazz, Americana wrapped up in a singer songwriter package. The use of horns in this album alone is worth mentioning - powerful, yet tragic sounding at the same time, gorgeous stuff.

Enjoy a few tracks from the album below that was recently released February 3rd, 2009 on Weewerk Records out of Toronto. He is in good company there with Great Lake Swimmers, Barzin and Elliott Brood to mention a few. The songs below show you two of the stand out tracks in “Oh, Maria” and “Downtown”, with the piano laded swing time that is “My Hands” included for good measure!

Their debut album ‘The Mammoth Sessions’ is redolent of sun-baked vacant lots, cracked runways, drifting tumble weed and dull orange rust. This collection of songs all sound like the aftermath of some emotionally violent event that has just left stillness and melancholia in its place. There are echoes of the (ex pat) Americana of The New Pornographers, a light dusting of the folk psychedelia of Smog and the torrid and threatening country death songs of PJ Harvey’s ‘To Bring You My Love’.

These 13 songs are anchored round the skewed and magnetic vision of singer/songwriter Teresa Maldonado and their brittle and skeletal songs are fleshed out by multi-instrumentalist Tiziano Hernandez (bass/guitars), Brad Thomason (drums) and Melly Rose (cello). But that’s not to say that this recording sounds like it was handled by some kind of your mother’s your brother, lives in a barn hillman. One of many stand out tracks, ‘Snake & Sparrow’, creaks and echoes as if recorded in a haunted house, on haunted equipment. And the title track briefly effloresces violently as if the ghost of the Enola Gay were bringing its terrible cargo home, before returning to gentleness once more. From the most basic of set ups, a deeply affecting and subtle beauty is achieved

The Dodos - 'Time To Die'



The Dodos es un grupo de músicos experimentales originario de San Francisco, California, EE.UU. Está conformado por Meric Long y Logan Kroeber. Aunque la banda se clasifica como Psych Folk o Noise Rock, es difícil definir el sonido de Dodos ya que en cada álbum experimentan con diversas corrientes e ideas, tales como las escenas New Weird America o Freak Folk

The Dodos se formaron por accidente. Meric Long había estado escribiendo y publicando canciones en solitario en formato trovador acústico, al tiempo que estudiaba percusión en la universidad. Al cabo de un tiempo contactó con Logan Kroeber, que también estaba metido en asuntos de percusión y decidieron bautizarse como The Dodos y empezar a tocar juntos.
